Dear Class 2 Families,

A very warm welcome back to school, and an extra-special welcome to Year 1 and Year 2!

We hope you have had a wonderful summer break and have made some lovely, lasting memories. We feel incredibly lucky to be teaching Class 2 this year and cannot wait to spend the year getting to know your children and watching them learn and grow.

It has been wonderful to see how well all the children have settled into their new class already. We are sure we are going to have a fabulous year together in Class 2!

Below are some of the routines we will follow throughout the year.

Water Bottles, Snacks and Uniform

Please ensure your child brings their own labelled water bottle to school on a Monday. This will be sent home on a Friday so that it can be washed and refilled ready for the following week.

Each child is provided with one piece of fruit per day. However, please also pack an additional fruit or vegetable snack for the morning.

Finally, please remember to label all jumpers, fleeces and cardigans. The weather can be very temperamental, so please ensure your child comes to school with a coat for rainy, wet playtimes — even if it is sunny when they leave home in the morning!

PE Days and Homework

Please send your child to school wearing their PE kit on Mondays and Fridays.

For homework this half term, we would like you to read with your child as often as possible. RWI reading books will be changed on Fridays.

For children following the RWI programme, part of their homework will be practising their Speedy Green Words and Red Words, which will be stuck into their reading diary. Please spend a little time each evening helping your child to practise reading these words.

Login details for Numbots, Spelling Shed and Seesaw will be stuck inside the front cover of your child’s reading diary. We will also send home some additional information about how to access and use these websites.

For our Year 2 children, we will also be sending home a homework quest linked to our class topic. The homework quest grid will be stuck into the children’s homework books. You can choose one activity from the quest grid each week and return it to school by the following Friday. Each Friday, the children will have the opportunity to share their homework with a friend.

Parent Helpers

As always, if anybody has some free time and would like to come in and help in class, particularly with listening to readers, please let us know. We would be delighted to welcome parents, grandparents or other family members who are able to help.

Barnaby Bear

Barnaby Bear will go home on Fridays with our Superstar of the Week.

There is absolutely no requirement to take Barnaby out and about with you over the weekend. However, he will come with his very own Adventures Book, and if you would like to, you can add photographs, drawings or stories about the fun he has had with your family!

We are so excited to be your child’s teachers this year and look forward to watching them learn, progress and grow into amazing little people.

Our topic this half term is The Great Fire of London, we are looking forward to lots of creativity and imaginative learning!

PE Days
PE will take place on Thursdays and Fridays, so please send your child to school in their PE kit on those days.

Homework
For homework this half term, our main focus is reading again. Please read with your child as often as possible. RWI reading books will be changed on Fridays. Children following the RWI programme will also have Speedy Green Words and Red Words to practise — these will be in their reading diary. A few minutes of practice each evening really makes a big difference! Children on AR have their own personal target, please could you spend some time asking them comprehension questions to gauge their understanding of the story.

Quest homework will be sent home each week, and the grid will be stuck into your child’s homework book. Children should choose one activity to complete each week.

Please return homework on a Thursday when children will share their work.

Try your best, have fun, and be creative!

Please encourage your child to access Spelling shed and Numbots weekly alongside reading and quest homework.

Show and Tell Fridays & Barnaby Bear
A huge thank you to everyone who has taken Barnaby Bear on your family adventures — the children have loved sharing his travels in class!

Show and Tell
This half term, we have decided that there will no longer be a timetabled session for show and tell. We will still give children the opportunity to share any exciting news or achievements with the class, but they will not have an allocated time to do this as we want to maximise the learning opportunities in class.

Water Bottles, Snacks and Uniform
Please make sure your child brings a labelled water bottle to school each Monday — we will send it home on Fridays. Each child is given one piece of fruit for a morning snack, but we ask that you also pack an extra fruit or veggie snack for the afternoon.

Please also ensure all jumpers, fleeces and cardigans are clearly labelled. As the weather warms up, please ensure your child brings a labelled sunhat into school everyday and ensure they have a high SPF sunscreen applied before coming to school.

This half term, our focus for Show and Tell is for the children to bring in something they have created themselves. This could be anything they are proud of making – we can’t wait to see their creativity!

We have made a small change to how Show and Tell will run this half term. Homework sharing and Show and Tell have been extremely popular, and we were finding that we were running out of time.

To make sure every child has the opportunity to share properly, Show and Tell will now take place across the afternoons in small groups. We will let the children know which day they will be sharing.

We hope you all had a wonderful two weeks, full of rest, fun and special memories.

Please make sure your child brings a labelled water bottle to school each Monday — we’ll send it home on Fridays. Each child is given one piece of fruit for a morning snack, but we ask that you also pack an extra fruit or veggie snack for the afternoon.

Please also ensure all jumpers, fleeces and cardigans are clearly labelled. The weather can be unpredictable, so your child should have a coat each day — even if it looks sunny in the morning!

Furthermore, we have also set all of class 2 up on spelling shed. An information sheet explaining how to access spelling shed will be stuck into your child’s homework book. Each child has an individual logon which will be stuck into the front of their reading record.

Show and Tell has also been a big success. This half term, however, we’re encouraging the children to bring in something a bit more extraordinary — perhaps something linked to our topic, or something special to them — rather than toys, keyrings, or playground treasures!

Looking Ahead

Last half term was fantastic — the children worked so hard preparing for the nativity performance and had lots of festive fun. This half term, our focus will continue to be on showing they are ready to learn and working on less fussing during transitions and routines.
