Our Allotment Visit

May 19, 2014Jan Brown

As part of our learning on Gardens and Growing we were fortunate to visit a local allotment where gardener Peter Murfin showed us around.  Once more we were reminded of how fortunate we all are to be living and learning in a rural environment.  Our walk there through the village gave us an opportunity to talk about and smell Wisteria growing in gardens and along the country lanes we stopped to admire the cow parsley and the may blossom growing in the hedgerows.

Once at the allotment we were able to recognise lots of vegetables that were growing and discovered all sorts of things about working an allotment. Pete also showed us many of the tools he uses and let us test out our gardening skills. We were fascinated by his shed and particularly the mole traps and learnt lots about creatures that are both good and bad for gardeners. Our visit ended with Pete digging up some potatoes, we were very interested in the ones that were rather peculiar shapes!

We’re enormously grateful to Gardener Pete for welcoming us so warmly to his allotment and sharing his expert knowledge with us.  We hope that Pete will be able to make a return visit and come and visit us in our own class garden where we will be able to give him a tour of all that we are growing.
