Class 4 spent a fantastic day at Dawlish Warren nature reserve and beach on Tuesday 21st May. We began our day with a ranger led workshop on the nature reserve. During this workshop, we learnt all about coastal processes including how the spit at Dawlish Warren is formed and how groynes help to stop the beach disappearing. We learnt that sand dunes act as a natural sea defence although these are often eroded in stormy weather. We also learnt about other coastal management strategies including rip rap or rock armour which is where large boulders create a wall to stop erosion as well as sloped sea walls. After lunch we had time on the beach to play in the sea before enjoying an ice cream in the sunshine. What a brilliant day!
